Cupcake Heaven Part 1: Gumpaste Daisies

Here it is, the secret to true happiness!!!  Decorating CUPCAKES!!
Truly, this is SO MUCH FUN!!

As I entered the realm of mother of nine, I realised that my quilting days are just about over…..for a time anyway.
Sigh.
My first love is the needle and thread, and since I cannot hope to sit down long enough to thread it, I realised pretty quickly after Kitty was born that I desperately needed another creative outlet that I could do standing up!! (Sad, but true).

As destiny would have it, I offered to bake cupcakes for my Mother-in-law’s 80th birthday party in July this year. When it was suggested that I use the cupcakes as THE cake….I was off!! Well!!! This would be no ordinary plate of cupcakes. I was so excited at the prospect of unleashing my creativity, in amongst washing nappies and oh yes, feeding my new baby, that I dedicated myself to exploring this new world of cake decorating, and OH, what a marvellous place it is!!

Truly marvellous.

I am totally hooked.

These little beauties are my all time favourite cupcakes so far. They were some of my practice cakes.

The secret is all in the GUMPASTE…and plunger cutters…..my new best friends.

The pearl glaze makes them shiny. Too nice.

Making the Daisies for my MIL’s cupcakes. I coloured the gumpaste with Americolor gel.

You can do amazing things by layering the daisies and curling them.

This was way too much fun. The children really enjoyed helping and watching. I will post some photos of the tools I used and most importantly, my daisy/gerbera plunger cuttter.

The finished product. I was really happy with how they turned out. I made 50 cupcakes and the birthday cake.

Stay tuned for pictures of my rosette swirls on the cake.

  2. PIECES OF SUNSHINE…thank you for your kind comments. I am in awe of your photography.

Gumpaste can be found in some Spotlight stores. I have also bought it online. The plunger cutters are amazing. I bought mine on ebay, but you can get them at cake decorating shops, like Kitchenware Plus near IKEA on the Gold Coast.
